Future design!

At the moment one after the other new truck is being launched. That has to do with Euro-6, and after all this news it will be a bit quite in the news section. Still, there will always be new trucks, and it is fun to see where that can lead to. Here you see two future design ideas of a Volvo and a Mack truck. I have no idea who made these and how serious they are, but they shure look good!

Volvo VNX, 600 Hp heavy transport truck

Volvo VNXVolvo Trucks has unveiled a powerful option for North American extreme gross weight applications with the launch of the Volvo VNX.

The VNX is powered by Volvo’s newly introduced D16 engine with 600 horsepower, 2,050 lb.- ft. torque and Volvo’s I-Shift automated manual transmission. Volvo showed the VNX at the 2013 Mid-America Trucking Show with demonstrator models available this summer and order taking starting this fall.

Developed for applications up to 225,000 pounds, the Volvo VNX is aimed at long combination vehicles, heavy equipment hauling, aggregate, low-boy, logging, oil field and mining operations.

The VNX is available with 385 wide- base, 425 and 445 tires to match front axle load capacity. Available rear axles range from 46,000 to 52,000 pounds in regular, dual-track and wide-track tandem configurations are available. Dual steering gears and a 20,000-pound steerable pusher axle are also available as options.

The VNX also provides an increased ride height to accomodate more articulation and front ramp angle. A signature feature of the VNX is its metallic, honeycomb- patterned grille and brightfinish steel bumper with center tow pin. A brightfinish steel moose bumper with center tow pin is also available.

The VNX utilizes Volvo’s full-size daycab equipped with Volvo’s ergonomic dash, storage room and contemporary styling and trim levels, ranging from vinyl for rugged applications to premium leather.

Safety features include the sloped hood and large windshield for visibility, standard driver’s side airbag and cab constructed with High-Strength Steel. Also standard is Volvo Enhanced Stability Technology, a full electronic stability program that assists the driver in maintaining control during emergency maneuvers and braking events, dramatically reducing the likelihood of a rollover or jackknife.

Kenworth ATe?

Paccar newsToday Paccar launched the Kenworth T680 Advantage Package, designed to maximize fuel economy through total vehicle design.

The Kenworth T680 Advantage truck, which effectively integrates aerodynamics, powertrain and electronic efficiencies combined into a complete tractor/trailer package to maximize fuel economy.
The Kenworth T680 Advantage was unveiled Wednesday, March 20, at the annual Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Ky. A full-size tractor-trailer is available for viewing outside the South Wing of the Kentucky Fair & Exposition Center, while a tractor and partial trailer are on display in Kenworth’s booth (30305). The Kenworth T680 Advantage begins with the 2013 ATD Heavy Duty Commercial Truck of the Year – the award-winning Kenworth T680 equipped with a 12.9-liter PACCAR MX-13 engine. The T680, which has received U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) SmartWay(R) Designation, was selected as the Advantage vehicle since it already possesses a number of standard features that make it Kenworth’s most aerodynamic model ever. To me it is the American version of DAF’s ATe concept wich is very succesvol in Europe.

Cat Trucks on the road

CAT TrucksCaterpillar never built trucks but only truck engines. Now most manufactorers, including Volvo, Paccar and Freightliner promote their own engines so that market gets smaller. Cat joined forces with Navistar and so a new truck brand was born: Cat Trucks. Very smart, because Cat has a strong reputation in the market.

These trucks are part of the Cat Trucks demofleet in Australia. I found the photo’s on Facebook.

Freightliner CNG Concrete mixer

Big sixpot coming up for MAN

Vlist MANAfter the presentation of the MAN engines for Euro 6 we are all waiting for the new big ones for heavy transport.

The V8 engine with 680 Hp is nog going to make it for Euro 6, and MAN annouced there will be a big sixpot in 2014.

The new big banger is going to be 15 – and a litte bit- litre and is going to have a bore of 138 mm. That makes the name in the MAN tradition D38.

Now MAN does have an agreement with Navistar for the D20 and D26 engines while Navistar was develloping a new 15 litre engine. That engine was to be based on the Cat C15, and that has a bore of… 138 mm!

Now is that a coincidence or is MAN working together with Cat? The Navistar 12,4 litre MaxxForce 13 litre engine is based on the MAN D26 engine, but built in the USA under licence. Now where it all comes together is that this engine is also supposed to be the platform of the comming Cat CT 13 engine.

Now there are some romours about a VW takeover of Navistar, but where does that leave the cooperation with Caterpillar? It is going to be ecxiting to see where this all goes to in the future.
