Driving the Streamline

Last week Scania offered us the chance to drive the new Euro-6 models in Sweden, including the new Streamline. I made this small movie to give you an impression of the day. Sorry for the sound, still working to get that right..

Scania mining truck

ScaniaB1Scania showed during the Bauma exhibition this big 10×4 R500. The thruck has two 9-ton front axles. two 16-ton driven axles and a 13 ton hydraulic steered tag axle. That makes a total GVW of 63 tons! An interesting detail is that Scania uses te corners on the cab of the Streamline version, without the big air-intakes on the corners. Streamlining in mining?

New EU proposal: Longer trucks, improved streamline

Renault StreamlineThe EU has proposed new regulations for truck dimensions, which have just been sent to the Parliament. The proposed extra length is meant to improve air resistance, and it might be added at the front and at the rear of the truck combination. Also trucks are allowed to be a little wider to allow sideskirts to streamline the sides of the vehicle. The truck industry has applied for these new regulations, it seems now that Brussels intends to approve them. Vehicle combinations can be up to 100 cm longer in the future, but the defined loading space as it exists now, has to stay the same. When these new proposals are approved, member states may still decide for themselves if and how to implement the new regulations. A fact is that with these air resistance measurements, trucks will run between seven and twelve percent more economical. Also, Brussels expects to reduce pedestrian and bicylist casualties significantly.

Brussels has also proposed  that the extra weight which comes with hybrid and electrical drivelines, won’t be of influence on the requirements of the driver. The proposal is that these vehicles can be up to a tonne heavier without any penalty regarding the driver’s licence. For instance, when a regular distribution truck weighs 7,5 tonnes, which makes it suitable for the C1 licence, the hybrid variant of some 8,5 tonnes will be allowed to be driven with a C1 licence as well.

Scania nose streamlineEverybody is ready for Euro-6. Meanwhile, improval of air resistance has been studied for a long time and it is going to be one of the main issues to reduce CO2 emissions further. Scania and Renault already showed prototypes of what these new, streamlined trucks could look like.

Scania Streamline scale model

Tekno2The new Scania Steamline is just out, and there is also the scale model! I found this on Facebook, and the Danish tekst says it is a Tekno 1:50 model. Looking good!

Scania testing the others

Scan 2Scania has its own logistic company, called Scania Transportlaboratorium AB. One of the routes is from Sweden to the Scania production plant in Zwolle, The Netherlands. The fleet of Scania Transportlaboratorium has all brands, and that makes it the perfect way to do their own comparison test. Here you see photo’s that Leonard made for Biglorryblog.

Scania Trolley Truck

11274-004Together with Siemens Scania developpes an electric powered truck with a pentograph, just like a train.

Scania has for a long time explored the possibilities of electrifying the powertrain in buses and trucks. Siemens has been working with technology, in which vehicles receive power from a wire in the air via a pantograph on the roof. The two companies have now teamed up to develop electrically powered trucks for commercial use.

“Full-scale demonstration of electrified road sections can quickly become a reality through this partnership,” says Henrik Henriksson, Executive Vice President and head of Scania’s sales and marketing. “Fuel savings made possible by electrification are huge, and this project is a foundation stone for fossil-free road transport.”
Scania continuously strives to reduce heavy transport’s environmental impact, and the development of electric vehicles
will be an important part of the transition to a more sustainable transport system. Scania’s powertrain technology with a hybrid powertrain (a combination of electric and internal combustion technology) can be supplemented by electrical transmission through a line in the air (conduction) or powered through the road surface (induction), thus becoming completely electrically powered on electrified road sections.

Scania: The return of the Streamline!

StreamlineThe Streamline Scania is back! Scania offers an aerodynamic optimized truck now that saves up to 8% on fuel accourding to the Swedish truckmanufactorer. The Streamline package is for the R- and G- series.

Other big news is that Scania announces a 410 Hp engine without EGR for Euro6!

At this moment also the V8 engines for Euro6 are launched. First they come with 520 and 580 Hp. The new topmodel is not announched yet, and I wonder if Scania is going to beat Volvo with more than 750 Hp in the future.

Scania V8 Euro 6 on Bauma?

Scania (10)On www.eurotransport.de i found an item that suggests that Scania will show the new V8 engines for Euro 6.

On the IAA Scania announched the new 16 liter V8 engines with 520, 580 and 730 Hp to arrive ‘in 2013′ and that is the year we live in now. A telephone call to Scania did’nt give me a yes or no to my question, but there is a chance that the new big ones will be in Munich.

Maybe they are talking about construction of industrial engines, lets find out later.

The Bauma exhibition will be held from 15 -21 april in Munich. Click here for the link.
