Volkswagen studies small electric van

e-co-motion-concepVolkswagen technicians have declared in the German press that a new van, smaller than the Caddy, is under development. This van will be electrically driven. At the recent Geneva Motor Show, Volkswagen unveiled the e-Co-Motion concept, which looks like a Transporter, but which has the dimensions of the Caddy. The new van will be even smaller than the e-Co-Motion.

Volkswagen emphasises that environmental requirements for delivery vehicles in cities will become much tighter in future. Menawhile, Volkswagen has developed electric drivelines for the Golf and Up! passenger cars. These drivelines are built around Lithium Ion batteries.

It is totally unclear what the exact dimensions of the new small van will be, but it is for sure that they will be nearly similar to that of the Fiat Fiorino, Peugeot Bipper, Citroën Nemo triplets. Volkswagen leraned from it’s fleet customers that they also look for a more versatile vehicle, with greater steering angles.

Crosswind assistant for new Mercedes Sprinter

SprinterLKSlrThe upcoming new Mercedes Sprinter van, will come with a whole army of assistant systems. All are safety related and come from the renowned Mercedes passenger car technology. However, Mercedes has developed a cross wind assistant which opoerates the ESP system in case of fierce crosswinds.

The system activates itself when the Sprinter moves faster than 80 km/h/50 mp/h. At this stage, no details about prices yet. Mercedes also helps the driver of the new Sprinter to ‘overlook’  the aera around the vehicle which is hardly visible with the aid of mirrors. So Mercedes has developed a radar system which helps again by avoiding your new Sprinter to get involved in a collision.

The new Mercedes Sprinter is set for introduction in June.

New vans in Geneva

Ford-CourierThe Geneva Motor Show features, apart from some exotic supercars, also a number of new vans. Showing in this picture is the passenger car version of the new Ford Courier, Fords small van which will be positioned under the next generation Transit Connect. Pictures of this new Transit Connect do not circulate, so please send us some if you this new and slightly bigger Ford.

In Birmingham, Ford will show the panel van version of the Courier, which will be built in Turkey. The new Courier will offer choice from two engines, a petrol 1.6 and a diesel 1.5 engine.

Also on show in Geneva was the Volkswagen e-co-Motion. This is an electric van with platform dimensions quite the same as the Caddy. However, the e-Co-Motion has the looks of a Transporter. It is obvious that manufacturers are highly interested in the segment of smaller vans. These are aimed at firms handling the distribution of goods bought online. We see that Volkswagen is clearly intending to bring out alternative drivelines, such as an electric van, whereas Ford, in the middle of a complete revamp of its van-line, sticks to the old petrol and diesel solutions.
